Yet this vision is full of contradictions: fascination and fear, admiration and contempt, curiosity and domination. Western narratives about Africa reveal as much about European imagination as about African realities, and they have sparked critical and rehabilitative responses, notably from thinkers like Cheikh Anta Diop.
